Weaving is a lifestyle

Image
Your life is important and what you put around you and in your body matters a great deal. Todays fibers of polyester ,Dacron, nylon were all developed after the Second World War . Scientist developed these to improve our lives and make for better defenses. “Nylon won the war” was a slogan from back then . Parachutes ,nylon stockings, newer fabrics.  My argument is still , these have helped mankind but let us not throw out the old technology, mainly natural fibers. We still sweat and shiver from the cold so you can not replace the wool and silk that mankind so cleverly has used for centuries. So weaving as a lifestyle ,yes, bring these natural fibers into your home again and rediscover a better home without the chemicals, formaldehyde and polyesters that small little fibers are washed into our oceans Tyou can find natural fibers at my website www.mainevillageweaver.com  Linen and cotton woven together in what used to be called  “Fustian” “ Cotton check bedspread woven in t...

Meditation Weaving

Weaving is a daily activity here at our workshop / home. It all began when my husband was away 4 months at a time fishing in Alaska. We lived in the Seattle area and weaving back in the 1970’s was resurgeing in popularity . I think Handwoven magazine got its start back then . So now Handwoven magazine has come out with an article called Weaving as meditation. I have to say “Yes” that’s it ! It is something I feel compelled to do every day . Now I can point to this article which explains how I feel while weaving . I also think that in this lies some connections to our past . Weavers back in time during all sorts of hardships and struggles found peace in the reassurance of a pattern that they could count on when life was in turmoil. I think of women here living in Maine who’s husbands went to sea for years . Many houses here have a “Widows Walk “ on top of their homes that was used to watch for their return . I know that same feeling . My husband took me up to Alaska for a “season” o...

Snow Day Feb 2017

Image
Lovely warm wishes to all of you ! A winters day here and happy that I have a loom in a heated shed . It is connected by a mud room to my kitchen so no going outside if I don't want to . My husband has to walk through snow to get to his shop but can skip through a gallery building if he wants to avoid snowy feet . Extension cord is for plugging in our diesel truck to keep the engine warm before starting  Window behind my loom

Life as a weaver and married to a metal artist

Image
we have been married 40 years now Andy and I . I turn 60 this month and have got some thoughts to share with you now. I have been quite about the subject but feel renewed after the election. Yes, I feel relieved that conservatism is not dead . When Andy and I got married in 1976 the backtotheland movement impressed us . Now looking back it was also a conservative movement too! Use less ,save more and don't forget the old ways of taking care of yourself . In the future posts I will share my thoughts on weaving as a lifestyle and being married to a metal artist . Raising productive children and being happy and grateful. Happy New Year ! Have a good life !
