www.mainevillageweaver.Etsy.com Keeping yourself busy or children busy can be a new challenge for some folks  Being a Weaver I found this type of activity engaging and fun  While being productive  Children love new things and we have come very far from our ancestral roots where this was an everyday activity  If you wanted socks you knitted socks  Potholders were always woven at home by young folks to be given as gifts  I can remember this as a summer activity  The neighborhood girls of all ages would sit and weave potholders  I always envied the older girls cause they knew how to make checks and plaids with the loops  I could only make multi colored potholders  Still that was how we all kept busy during those hot summer days  You can only put together so many puzzles during this time at home  Try making a potholder   You’ll get hooked

Such a wonderful story of a woman named Mary Meigs Atwater  She made it possible for weavers to understand weaving on a loom ,back strap look or inkle loom. Her gift was being able to write about weaving and record the weaving drafts so we could all enjoy the history and the beauty of patterns . This book published by Interweave Press  and compiled by Mary Jo Reiter was for me a treasure to get to know the person behind my most beloved books The Shuttle-Craft Book of American Hand -Weaving  and Byways in Hand -Weaving  Cover of book “Weaving a Life “ The Story of Mary Meigs Atwater  Being a self taught Weaver these books were used constantly while I practiced weaving  Now I would recommend them to folks starting out weaving and adding these to your library 

 Hand Woven Cotton Chenille upholstery fabric is also naturally Hand Dyed with indigo by Botanical Shades. Diamond pattern woven in cotton chenille is sturdy and can be used to upholster a chair . Several yards are available for sale . Commissions accepted if interested in hand woven textiles for the home interior design . Hand woven means I use a floor loom and throw a shuttle filled with yarn back and forth as I weave the intricate pattern . Pedals under the loom raise and lower the threads in a system that creates the design . Hand dyed means that Botanical Shades used indigo plant dye to create the color . Unique and each pieces is one of a kind .

I have woven the FLAG of TRUCE that was waved on the end of a stick at the end of the American Civil war . Peace and let our differences not keep us apart but unite the country . Flag of TRUCE  Just a simple dish towel cut in half and used to end the Civil War at Appomattox  Tell all that the war is over  Live in Peace  The Truce Cloth  A simple ,hand woven 100% cotton towel brought truce toThe CivilWar on April 9 1865. The Truce was ordered by General Robert E. Lee ,carried on horseback tied to the end of a branch by James Longstreet.  The remains of this’s monumental cloth are housed today in the National Museum of American History,Smithsonian Institute ,Bering Center.  This is my exact rendition of that cloth . This weekend I had a wonderful Pastel Artist stay with us in our upstairs bedroom.our bedrooms upstairs are large about 16 x16 ft with a fireplace ( not functioning) great mantle and my handwoven items decorate the room . I hand wove the curtains ,rug, blankets for our quests to experience the warmth of hand made . I was able to go to Fiber Frolic up in Windsor Maine yesterday, it is still going today Sunday June 2 2019 . If you can , go to it. Maine fiber farms are alive and well and could use more business to keep them going . Packing up to be there away from their animals is a big deal . There were booths there stocked with precious skeins of yarn ,roving , fleeces and sheepskins Lavender was on the wind from the Lavender grower there. Soap, rug hooking , and patterns A few animals on display to keep the young and old entertained. I went on the hunt for the farm that grew , spun and bonus!  dyed their yarn . When weaving it is hard to cut the material after it is woven . Carefully washing and pressing your fabric and now what to do with it ? I came across this wonderful usage of hand woven fabric on the Mendocino wool and Fiber website . https://www.mendowool.com/blog/fabric-usage Her explanation of using the fabric for a top makes a lot of sense and I am going to try it . My Burnt Orange Poncho of Hand woven cotton bamboo and locally sourced alpaca yarn is on my website .Limited production so when it is gone ....  These are yummy to the touch and full of eye catching texture. Hand Dyed Skeins  of yarns  ready So excited to be going to this show ! Taking with me are my OPEN WEAVE SHAWLS using the hand dyed skeins of yarn I did last summer They are all dyed with Knotweed  Knotweed is also called Japanese bamboo and is invasive. I mordant with rusty iron found in my husband s metal shop  This gives it a grayed down scale The skeins were dyed in the picture at different times of the growing season making the color different as the plants matured. I found this print from 1911 depicting a young girl at her flax wheel  Raw flax is wound onto her distaff on her spinning wheel  Notice that she is multi tasking cause she is also reading a book at the same time  Smart girl!  Did you know that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was living in Portland Maine in the early 19th century? His family was from Portland ,Maine  Maine was apart of Massachusetts back then up to 1820
